Book One

The Tale Of Olaf

Chapter 1

705 A.D.

Viking long ships raid an English coast. With axes and spears they conquer the village.   No-one can withstand the blow of a sword, if you lived, the second blow would bring you down.

The houses aflame, crops burnt, livestock killed, survivors flee for their lives…….

Marius, Sven’s second in command came up, “Sven this cropland is good.”

“Yes, but Olaf isn’t far behind, we must search for a stream. If we’re lucky we’ll lose Olaf” said Sven.

“But what if we don’t lose him?” asked Marius.

“We’ll leave our ships and move on land” Sven replied.

“He’ll find our ships and track us down”

“Well work that out when we come to it!”shouted Sven.

Unsatisfied Marius walked away.

“We sail at sunset ! some of us will hunt, others will look for water.”said Sven

They ate and drank until sunset and went to search for a stream.

They sailed for days stopping only for food and water.Their only rest was when they ate .When they slept they were punished, cruelty and misery dwelt on the ship.  A single second of leisure and punishment was given.

but atlast a stream was found.

The crew had no eagerness but relief, for their journey was soon over.

What lay ahead was unknown and unexplored by Vikings.

Meanwhile on Olaf’s ship, a sleeping awake to be marauded by a horde of Saxons! They burn the ship and kill all the crew except Olaf, Gunnar, Thor, Leif and Erick .

“Gunner, Thor !”Olaf yelled.

Thor yelled back”Olaf! were are you!”

Olaf replied” I think I’m near the mast, were’s Gunnar, Leif and Erick!

“I think I found Erick!” said Thor.

“Go towards the shore!” shouted Olaf.

“I think I see Gunnar!”

“Watch out Gunnar, hey it’s me!” Leif shouted as he ducked a axe swing.

“Come on, let’s go!” said Erick.

Chapter2

Before Leif and Erick left with Olaf to fight Sven, Erick’s father had gotten in to a big fight in Norway, Olaf helped them to move out of Norway because the did not want him causing any more trouble.

A month after the Saxon attack Leif and Erick had left.

5 months later.

“Olaf I see a long-ship at the docks.” said Thor.

“whose is it,” Olaf replied.

“I can’t tell.” said Thor.

“Let’s go see.” Olaf said.

“Alright.”

“Olaf?” said Thor.

“What.”

“What if it’s Sven’s ship.”

“Probably not.”

“Why do you say that.”

“Because his sail is black, this ship has red stripes on white.”

“No I think it’s white stripes on red.”

“No the red sticks out more.”

“No the white does.”

“No the red does!”

“White!’

“Red!”

“white!”

“Red!”

“White!”

“Red!”

“White!”

“I don’t care what you say, I’m right!”

“No I’m right!”

“Who cares!”

“I…don’t…know.”

“Then shut up!”

“Alright.”

The two walked on as if nothing had happened. They stopped at the docks, Leif was waiting for them….

“Leif!” shouted Olaf.

Gunnar told me you still live here.”said Leif.

“that’s were he was”said Thor.

“Is this Erick’s ship?” asked Olaf.

“No,”said Leif “it’s mine.”

“Wow.”

“Where’s Gunnar?”asked Olaf.

“On board,” said Thor” I can see him.”

“Olaf, Thor, were have you been, I’m already one of the crew!”shouted Gunnar, from above.

“Well Leif.”said Thor”Sign me up to.”

“Great, now if only I could get Olaf to join I would have just enough.”

“What do you mean if, I’m coming.”

“Where are we going any way?”asked Thor.

“Were stopping in Iceland, then Greenland,then we’ll explore!’

“Where’s Iceland.”said Olaf.

“Where’s blueland, hehee”said Thor, who had been drinking beer the whole time.

“which way are we going.” said Gunnar

“Hold on, I’ve only got one mouth.” said Leif heartily.

“O really.” said Thor “I didn’t know.”

“Shut up Thor,” said Olaf “ya drunk fool.”

“Yer tellin me too shut up .”replied Thor.

“Yeah, I am!”

“Both of you shut up, I,ll tell you were Iceland is, were Greenland is and which way were going.”

“Good “said Gunnar.

“Now .”said Leif “Iceland is far north, it’s small and there’s lots of icebergs.

“Wow, hahaha, Iceland.”said Thor, the drunk.

“Stop talking!”shouted Leif “Now, Greenland, far west, larger than Norway, much larger, fair and abundant with green herbs and fruit.”

“Wow, green herbs, hehe, Greenland.”said Thor even more drunk.

“Thor your full of beer.”said Olaf.

“Beer beer beer hahaha.”  said Thor drinking beer.

Leif decided he should smash Thor’s beer bottle and give him a good punch in the nose,  but he didn’t, but he didn’t; instead he pushed Thor, took his beer, set it aside and said. “Thor beer is not allowed on my ship,neither are drunkards. Now Olaf take Thor up to the ship to get sober.

but unfortunately, now Olaf was looking temptingly at the beer.  ”Olaf!”  leif shouted.  ”stop it.”

“What.”  replied Olaf absent minded.  ”Oh sorry Leif.”

Olaf and Leif both walked aboard to Take Thor to the tent were Erick was.

“So how did you get here?”  said Olaf “I mean how did you get a ship, you isn’t know about Greenland before.”

“Well.”  said Leif  ”when we were attacked by Saxons we left for Iceland.  Father got into a fight there…”

“Hey don’t be so hard non your own father.” said Erick jestingly.

“We were sentenced to banishment.  We sailed so far that we ran into land , it was filled with green herbs and bountifull fruit trees, we named it Greenland

“Wait ” said Olaf “you discovered Greenland?”

“No’ said Leif “father did, and now many vikings live there,but unfortunately almost none of them are Christian.”

“What” cried Olaf in a sudden outburst” why do you care.  Wait your not saying…”

“I am.”  said Leif.

Just then Gunnar walked in and said”Hey Olaf, guess what, I* was talking to one of the crew and he said that he was a Christian hahahahehehehe hee hee, hee…  Olaf your not laughing.

“Gunnar ‘ Leif is a Christian.”

“Ha” said Gunnar”yer joking right, aren’t you, Olaf aren’t you Leif your not a …

Leif spoke.  ”I am, it is my own choice and I hope to make it yours.

“But Leif”said Olaf “Odin is king of all gods and goddesses, there are many gods, not just one.  and I hope to go to Valhalla when I die, not to some heaven.  Leif don’t  you see.”

“Olaf,”said Leif quit seriously, “you cannot make me change my mind, andperhaps I can’t change yours:because I know you are very stubburn, and…”

“What makes you think theres only one God?”  said Gunnar.  ”seriously, what do you believe in.
