They were footsteps! He began to breathe quietly, his heart began to beat so loud that he thought that the men in the hall would surely be able to hear it. Slowly, he turned his head towards the door. there were lights in the hall, moving around like people were rushing by.
Aryk got out of his bed, and slowly made his way to the door. The door began to move. Aryk swung it wide open and burst through. but, to his surprise, the person opening the dor was his own good freind Brek.
“Aryk, I was about to wake you.” Brek said surprisedly “Three guards spotted Efrosains in the city!”
“That is terrible news. Give me a moment to gird on my sword.”
“I shall wait for you here.”
Aryk returned to his room, upon the wall above his bed hung his sword. He had forged it himself, and he had done it well to. on the hilt he had carved both his own name and the name of the sword, Revan. on the pomel he had carved an eight pointed star, his families mark. He strapped the great two handed sword across his back and put on his helmet.
“Come Aryk, we must hurry, the Efrosains still don’t know that we know that they’re here.”
They hurredly exited Aryks house and ran towards th town hall. on the outside you couldn’t tell that anyone was inside, However, upon entering you could see that it was in fact swarming with men.
“Brek, Aryk!” shouted Aryks father “Go with Brye and his company to defend the church, or they’ll burn it down.”
Brye’s company was two hundred fifty in number, all well trained and seasoned soilders. that was why they were chosen rather thav a larger body of untrained, unorganized rable. And, aside from the Moytiers personel guard and the main body of the armies of Arken, Brye’s company was the best.
They arrived at the church and began tocreate a sheild wall. Aryk had no shield with him, so there was a gap, but everyone there knew that Aryk could more than make up for this, he could even hold his own against ten men.
The Efrosains saw the shield wall shining in the moonlight. They charged with a yell! The Rekanes held their ground. The wild heathens hit the shield wall with tremendous force causing the Rekanes to give a full two feet, but this was quickly regained. One of the foe tried to stab Aryk with his spear, but Aryk sliced it in half and then brought his sword down on the owner of the spear. A hefty Axe hit Breks shield with full force and it would have knocked him down if Aryk had not grasped him by the arm and pulled back him up.
“Advance!” shouted Brye over the yells and screams.
They advanced upon the Efrosains, hewing them down like dogs. They quickly retreated before the mighty swords and the impenetrable shield wall of the Rekanes. The blood soaked the ground, and the bodies were strewn thick on top of it.
The Efrosains renewed their attack, it had been a trick. But the surprise didn’t last long, the Rekanes drove them away as quickly as before. Then from behind another force attacked, and nearly beat the Rekanes all the way to the church walls! But thankfully the well seasoned troops had not ran towards the fight and wasted themselves and left themselves vulnerable to attack.
An ax was about to come down on Aryk, when Brek raised his shield to cover him, he then received a blow to his leg and fell down.
“Brek!” Aryk shouted.
“I’m fine, just help me up.”
Aryk pulled him up and stabbed a foe immediately after doing so. Another stabbed at him and yet another tried to slice his neck, he dodged the stab and blocked the slice. He then ran one through, the other grabbed him by the helmet and pulled it off as Aryk dispatched him. By this time Breks leg was almost covered in Blood, and he wasn’t using as extensively as he had been.
The night was cold, but every one of Brye’s company was sweating like the sun was at its highest. The moonlight was shining so bright that the soldiers could see perfectly, but if they actually wanted to see all the slaughter and blood shed that had taken place there I can’t say.
Aryk had just slain another foe, when a loud shout arose from the enemy and, all of the sudden, all those directly in front of him tried to burst through the shield wall by the gap that his lack of shield had caused. Aryk fought them back as best he could but there were to many, far to many. He dug his heels in, but it didn’t work, they just pushed him back. As a sword was about to strike him to remove him from their path for good Brek jumped in!
“Oh no you don’t! he shouted as he, with his strong arms, good sword, and good shield, pushed the enemy backwards.
“Good work Brek, and thank you.”said Aryk, gratefully.
The battle raged on as the night got darker, and the moon hung lower in the sky. The men were exhausted, and with good reason, for it was far past midnight. Brek’s leg was soaked, and he was hardly using it. At times he was standing on only one foot, in an effort to assuage the pain.
At long last a large body of soildiers arived, and began to attack the Efrosains from behind. At this the Efrosains fled the town, and the battle was over.
Aryk glanced around, the Efrosains were nowhere to be seen.
“We’ve won.” he said “We’ve won!”
“Huzzah!” shouted the men “Huzzah, huzzah!”
Brek retreated to the church steps and sat down. Aryk sat down next to him.
“how is your leg?” he asked.
“Terrible, just terrible.” he answered.
Aryk looked at it. It was on his thigh, and very deep, and his leg was covered in the blood that flowed from it freely.
“I’ll get you a physician.”
“Thank you Aryk.”
“You saved me countless times in that battle, it’s the least I could do.”
They grasped each others wrists and shook warmly. As Aryk was going to get a physician he met both his father and Keyf, Breks father.
“Aryk.” said Keyf “Good too see you, do you know where my son is?”
“I do sir, he is just outside the church, I was going to get a physician for him.”
“why what’s happened?”
“He has a deep wound in his thigh.”
“I shall find one for him.” said Aryk’s father “You there, come with me.
They arrived at the church and saw the wound, which the physician immediately began to dress.
“How did that happen son?”
“In the fight I saw that an Efrosain was about to slay Aryk.” he began “So I raised my shield to defend him, for he had no shield of his own, and in doing so I received this wound.”
“Well you fought Bravely my son.”
“Aye, very bravely.” repeated Aryk’s father. “I have decided that you two will remain in Brye’s company.”
“Thank you father, but how do we know that there will be any more attacks?”
“We don’t know son, but we must remain careful.”
“Well Seyrd.” said Keyf, addressing Aryk’s father “We should see to the others shouldn’t we?”
“Aye.”
And with that they left; Soon the physician left as well. Brek moved his leg around, stood up and walked a few steps, limping a good deal.
“How does it feel?” asked Aryk.
“It hurts a small amount. but it will soon heal.”
“That is good.”
“Do you think they will come back Aryk?”
“I don’t know, Brek, I don’t know.”
